Choosing the Right Consumables for DTF Printing

DTF print quality depends on three consumables working together: ink, adhesive powder, and transfer film. The right combination gives cleaner white coverage, reliable adhesion, smooth film release, and more consistent results.

Treat these consumables as one system. Ink needs to flow reliably through the printhead, film needs to hold and release the printed layer cleanly, and powder needs to form an even adhesive layer.

This guide explains what each consumable does, how to choose a compatible setup, and how to keep print quality consistent.

What Goes Into a DTF Transfer?

In Direct-to-Film printing, the design is printed in reverse onto a coated PET film, covered with hot-melt adhesive powder while the ink is still wet, cured, and then heat-pressed onto the garment. The film is peeled away after pressing according to the film’s peel type.

The three core consumables are:

  • DTF ink — CMYK colors plus white ink for the opaque underbase.
  • DTF adhesive powder — the hot-melt layer that bonds the printed image to fabric.
  • DTF transfer film — the coated PET carrier that receives the print and releases it during transfer.

Cleaning fluid, moisturizing liquid, swabs, and other maintenance supplies support the printer and help keep the system running smoothly.

Start with Ink Compatibility and White-Ink Stability

DTF ink is a water-based pigment ink formulated for printing onto DTF film. Most DTF workflows use CMYK plus white. The color inks reproduce the artwork, while white ink creates the opaque base that keeps the design visible on dark garments and helps color stay consistent across different fabric colors.

Why white DTF ink needs more attention

White ink contains a high pigment load and settles more easily than CMYK ink. Stable white output depends on regular circulation and good printhead condition. If white output looks thin, gray, or uneven, check ink circulation, ink level, and the nozzle pattern first.

DTF ink vs. sublimation ink

DTF ink and sublimation ink use different transfer mechanisms. Sublimation ink turns into gas under heat and dyes polyester fibers, so it is mainly used on light-colored polyester or coated sublimation blanks. DTF ink stays in a printed adhesive layer, which allows it to work across a wider range of garment colors and fabric types. Use DTF ink in a DTF printer and sublimation ink in a sublimation setup.

What to look for when choosing DTF ink

  • Printer compatibility — choose ink that matches the printhead and ink-delivery system.
  • White-ink stability — choose ink that delivers consistent opacity and reliable flow.
  • Color consistency — use the RIP settings or color profiles intended for the ink and printer whenever possible.
  • Storage and handling — keep bottles sealed and away from heat or direct sunlight, and agitate white ink as recommended.

Choose Powder for Consistent Bonding

DTF powder is a hot-melt adhesive. It is applied while the printed ink is still wet, so the powder sticks to the image area. During curing, the powder melts into an adhesive layer; during heat pressing, that layer bonds the printed design to the garment.

Apply enough powder to cover the wet image evenly, then remove loose excess. Even coverage supports strong adhesion and a cleaner, softer finish.

Does powder grain size matter?

DTF powders vary in particle size and formulation. The key is how well the powder works with your ink, film, fabric, and curing process.

Procolored’s standard DTF adhesive powder is a fine-grain polyurethane hot-melt powder (TPU210) designed to work with its DTF ink and film system. For most users, compatibility and repeatability matter more than stocking several grain sizes.

How to use DTF powder consistently

  1. Apply powder while the printed ink is still wet.
  2. Cover the printed area completely, then remove loose excess so there are no obvious clumps or bare spots.
  3. Cure the powdered transfer using the temperature and time recommended for your film, powder, and equipment combination.
  4. Before a large run, test a small transfer and check adhesion, peel behavior, edge cleanliness, and hand feel.

Choose Film Around Your Peel and Production Workflow

DTF film is the coated PET carrier that receives the ink, carries the powdered image through curing, and releases the transfer after heat pressing. Someone may also see the search term “DTF transfer paper,” but PET transfer film is the more accurate description.

A good film holds the printed layer securely during printing and curing, then releases it cleanly after pressing. Film quality affects ink laydown, powder behavior, feeding stability, and peel quality.

Cold peel vs. hot peel

The peel type tells you when to remove the carrier after pressing. Cold-peel film cools before peeling, while hot-peel film releases while the transfer is still hot or warm. Choose the peel type that fits your workflow and follow the film specification.

Storage Conditions Affect Print Consistency

  • Ink: keep bottles sealed, cool, and away from direct sunlight. Follow the recommended white-ink agitation routine before use.
  • Powder: keep the container tightly closed and dry. Moisture can cause clumping and uneven application.
  • Film: keep it dry, clean, and protected from dust or deformation. Specialty coated films should remain in their packaging until needed.
